President Ruto Williams has taken decisive action to foster a responsible gaming and betting culture in Kenya. By establishing a dynamic 22-member task force, he aims to reshape the industry. With the committee set to have begun its mission on 16 February 2023, a wave of transformation awaits players at top betting sites in Kenya.
The newly set-up task force is divided into two branches: the steering committee and the technical committee. The steering committee will be headed by Dr Raval Narendra and deputized by Gideon Thuranira.
This formidable team comprises members from key ministries, including Interior, National Treasury, Social Protection, Culture, and Heritage. The committee also benefits from the legal expertise of representatives from the Solicitor General’s office and the Council of Governors.
The team must develop strategies to oversee the operationalization of the National Lottery. It must also create reforms and facilitate a sustainable framework to implement them. A memo dated 17 February 2023 states that it must develop procedures to discharge its duties amidst Kenya’s gambling surge. This includes holding public forums and consultations with experts.
The esteemed Dr Linda Musumba has been appointed as the technical committee chair. Joining her are the accomplished team of Wanjiku Wakogi, Dr Eric Aligula, Collins Kiprono, Peter Mbugi, Fred Mbasi, Geoffrey Malombe, Eric Korir, Wilson Njenga, Catherine Ochanda, and Murimi Murage.
