Switzerland vs Cameroon

24 November 2022

BCA Prediction: Switzerland win

Rigobert Song’s Cameroon side have it all to do as they kick off their World Cup campaign against Switzerland on Thursday. Cameroon have lost all of their last 7 fixtures in this tournament, and they have only made it past the group stages in only one of the 7 World Cups in which they have participated. They have won 3 of their last 6 competitive matches coming into this tournament but wins against Equatorial Guinea and Burundi are hardly groundbreaking.

On the other hand, Switzerland has been facing up to much better teams, and they have won their last 3 competitive matches, putting Spain, Portugal and Czech Republic to the sword. They went unbeaten and finished top in qualifying ahead of Italy for this tournament. At the World Cup proper, Switzerland have passed the group stage in 4 of their last 5 appearances.

The Indomitable Lions will be keen to improve on their poor recent World Cup record, but Switzerland are ranked above in terms of quality. Cameroon-born Breel Embolo will be particularly eager to make an impact against his birth country. He has scored 7 goals in 11 matches for Switzerland since the start of 2021, so he is in fine goalscoring form. There have been under 2.5 goals in Cameroon’s last 5 most recent games, so even though we expect a Switzerland victory, it won’t be by many goals.

Key Takeaways:

  • Switzerland have managed to win their last 3 all competitions clashes at both half-time and full-time
  • There are no losses for Switzerland in 31 of their most recent 32 home games (all competitions)
  • Cameroon haven’t lost in 14 of their last 16 matches in all competitions
  • In Cameroon’s last 5 games in all competitions, there have been under 2.5 goals scored

Uruguay vs South Korea

24 November 2022

BCA Prediction: Uruguay win either half

Uruguay’s fortunes have noticeably improved under coach Diego Alonso. Having lost four consecutive games in qualifying, which led to a managerial change, they won the next four qualifiers under the new manager and clinched their World Cup spot. Overall, the 2-time world champions have won 7 out of their nine fixtures under Alonso.

Uruguay’s opponents on Thursday are also in good form. South Korea have scored in 9 of their last 10 games and have won 5 of their last six matches. More impressively, they have kept clean sheets in all of those five victories. They cruised through qualifying, winning 10, drawing 2 and only losing the last match with qualification already assured. Worryingly though, the Koreans have lost 6 out of their last nine world cup games.

With star man Son Heung-min coming into this tournament with an injury and likely to play without being at 100%, South Korea may not be as effective in attack. Uruguay, on the other hand, have several players in fine form and peak condition – Federico Valverde, Rodrigo Bentancur and Darwin Nunez. Experienced strikers Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez offer tournament know-how, and overall, they look the more balanced of the two sides, so we back them to win or draw.

Key Takeaways:

  • A series of 4 consecutive all-competition wins mark Uruguay’s latest record
  • Uruguay are unbeaten in 18 of their last 21 home matches in all competitions
  • South Korea are undefeated at half-time in their last 12 away all competitions games in a row
  • South Korea are on a poor run of just 1 win in 9 matches (World Cup)

Portugal vs Ghana

24 November 2022

Our Tip: Portugal win and over 1.5

The Black Stars are the lowest-ranked team at the 2022 World Cup, so they face an uphill task to get a result against Portugal. Ghana have won only 1 in their last seven games on the world stage, and it will be interesting to see if the tournament’s youngest squad can improve on that poor record.

They come up against a Portugal side who have developed a habit of fast starts. The Portuguese have led at halftime in every single one of their last 10 victories. Their final 6 qualifiers saw 14 goals before halftime, indicating that Fernando Santos is finally moving away from the defensive style for which he was much criticized. With the controversy surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent outburst and this likely being his last World Cup, he will play like a man with a point to prove.

Ghana’s qualification has attracted players like Inaki Williams and Tariq Lamptey, but the squad still looks short of the quality to match up to Portugal. The Black Stars scraped past Nigeria by an away goal in their World Cup play-off, but Portugal breezed through the Nigeria Super Eagles in a warm-up match a few days ago with a 4:0 bashing. We expect Portugal to show the gulf in class by beating the Ghanaians comfortably on Thursday evening.

Key Takeaways:

  • Portugal have won 3, drawn 1 and lost two of their last six competitive games
  • Portugal scored 9 of their 14 goals in World Cup qualifying before half-time
  • Ghana have only won 1 of their last seven World Cup matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals in Ghana’s last 3 World Cup games

Brazil vs Serbia

24 November 2022, 22:00

Our Tip: Brazil win

This is not the first time these two teams will face off. They met in the 2018 World Cup, with Brazil winning by a score of 2:1. Brazil has won four and drawn two of its last six games. In contrast, Serbia has won 4 matches, drawn 1, and lost 1.

Brazil is one of the favorites to win this tournament as they arrive in Qatar with an array of starters after dropping Liverpool’s forward, Firminho, from the squad. Brazil is unbeaten in their last 19 home games in all competitions, with seven straight home wins to mark Brazil’s latest record.

Serbia will be going up against the record winner of this tournament. Serbia has gone undefeated at halftime in their last 13 away games in all competitions and 22 of their most recent away games in all competitions. Brazil will not have it easy in this tie as Serbia are unbeaten in all their last ten away matches in all competitions, so Brazil better watch out.

Neymar and the Samba boys go head-to-head with Mitrovic and his teammates to secure a place at the top of the Group D table. With the facts presented, it’s clear that this will not be an easy game for Brazil, but they will come out victorious.

Key Takeaways:

  • Brazil are unbeaten in 29 of their last 30 all competitions games
  • At least 3 goals have separated Brazil and their oponents in their last 3 wins in all competitions
  • Serbia have not suffered any defeats at HT in their 13 most recent consecutive away matches in all competitions
  • In all of their 10 most recent away matches of all competitions, there have been no losses for Serbia
