Spearheaded by the industrious KwaZulu-Natal Gaming and Betting Board, this sector has successfully funnelled a staggering R724 million into vital community services, demonstrating its pivotal role in uplifting the region’s socio-economic landscape.

During the prestigious 15th Gambling Regulators African Forum (GRAF) Conference, held at the Sibaya Casino in Durban, Siboniso Duma, the MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA), shared these remarkable figures. This annual gathering, which attracts over 500 delegates from around the globe, serves as a melting pot for regulators to share insights, tackle regulatory challenges, and sculpt the future landscape of the African gambling industry.
The 2024 conference, unfolding from 2 to 5 April under the theme “Fostering Unity Towards a Coordinated Gaming Regulatory Framework for Africa,” underscores the sector’s critical role in KZN’s economic matrix. Duma highlighted the sector’s R2 billion investment in the province, a strategic move that not only spawns employment opportunities but also invigorates tourism, construction, and other key economic segments.
Service Delivery at the Forefront
Duma elucidated how the generated revenue is allocated to pivotal service delivery programs—ranging from infrastructure projects like roads and houses to the enhancement of education, health, welfare services, and utilities. This financial infusion into the local economy is a testament to the gambling industry’s contribution to societal welfare and development.
Spotlight on the Durban July
One of the crowning jewels of KZN’s gambling sector is the iconic Durban July, now rebranded as Hollywood Bet. This premier horse racing event, boasting a prize pool exceeding R4.5 million and a turnover of R140 million, has long been a magnet for tourism and employment, creating both temporary and permanent job opportunities across various sectors.
The COVID-19 pandemic has undeniably dealt a heavy blow to the industry, with jockeys and trainers facing significant financial losses. Yet, under Duma’s stewardship, stakeholders have rallied to revitalize the sector, recognizing its substantial contribution to the GDP, tax revenue, and the local economy.
Embracing Rural Talent and Transforming the Industry
The government’s collaborative efforts with license holders aim to diversify and enrich the horse racing industry, extending opportunities to rural communities through traditional racing events like Dundee July and Umtelebhelo.
