Karabo Mbele, who stepped into the role of CEO at the Gauteng Gambling Board (GGB) just over a year ago, has already marked a significant turnaround for the organization. Despite facing initial turbulence, including allegations of maladministration and corruption, Mbele’s tenure is now characterized by progress and a clear vision for the future.
Mbele’s appointment in October of the previous year stirred controversy, with a faction of 11 dismissed employees challenging her leadership, accusing her of engaging in a wrongful purge. Yet, speaking to The Star, Mbele confidently shared that subsequent investigations have absolved her of any wrongdoing, setting the stage for her to propel the GGB towards its goals of revenue generation and operational stability.
“My journey at GGB’s helm has been both rewarding and fraught with obstacles. We’ve focused on stabilizing and enhancing the organization. Past tendencies to maintain a cordial relationship with casino operators had seen us lagging behind our provincial counterparts. Now, with key positions being filled and the right talent coming aboard, we’re poised for success,” Mbele reflected.
Navigating Through Storms of Allegations
The shadow of corruption allegations loomed large at the outset of Mbele’s leadership. However, she views such accusations as inevitable challenges that accompany progress. “Criticism often targets those in motion, signifying our strides towards meaningful change,” Mbele noted.
The discord partly stemmed from directives by the Gauteng Economic Development MEC, Tasneem Motara, who called for the board’s dissolution amidst a wave of resignations. Critics of Mbele’s leadership voiced concerns in a letter to Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, hinting at potential misappropriation of funds exceeding R15 million through informal non-profit organizations.
Despite these accusations, Mbele remains unshaken. “Our stance against corruption within GGB adheres strictly to the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA), ensuring accountability and integrity. The judiciary has echoed this sentiment, affirming the legality of my appointment and dismissing the allegations against me,” she stated.
Crackdown on Illegal Online Gambling
Under Mbele’s watch, the GGB has launched a decisive offensive against illegal online gambling, closing down approximately 400 illicit platforms in the past year alone. This feat, accomplished by a dedicated team of merely three members, underscores the effectiveness of the board’s strategies in combating digital gambling violations.
“Our mission extends beyond increasing revenue; it’s about purging the industry of illegal activities. We invite licensed operators to join us in this endeavor, fostering a legal, safe, and prosperous gambling environment,” Mbele concluded.
As the GGB forges ahead under Karabo Mbele’s leadership, the focus remains on reinforcing regulatory frameworks, nurturing talent, and collaborating with stakeholders to ensure a transparent and thriving gambling sector in Gauteng.
