Australia vs Denmark
30 November 2022
BCA Prediction: Ecuador Win or Draw (1X)
All possible outcomes are still on in the final round of games in Group D, with Australia and Denmark battling with Tunisia for the coveted second-place spot. Australia only needs a draw to qualify if France defeats the Tunisians in the other game while Denmark must win to qualify. The Australians bounced back from their opening 4-1 defeat to France with a hard-fought 1-0 win against Tunisia. This means the France game is the only one they have lost in their last 7 internationals.
Denmark have now won only 1 of their last 7 World Cup matches. Their 6 most recent games in the tournament have each finished in draws at halftime. The last time they won an international game by more than 2 goals was in November last year against Faroe Islands, so they are not a team that blows opponents away with scintillating displays of attacking football. They have shown little potency going forward in their two games so far, and the only goal they have scored so far was scored by centre-back Andreas Christiansen.
Only victory will see Kasper Hjulmand’s men through here, and even though they have some real quality in midfield with Christian Eriksen and Pierre-Emile Hojberg, they are lacking firepower in attack. With the possibility of Australia having to hold out for a draw at some point, we feel that Denmark will dominate but may eventually fail to find the goal(s) to win the game outrightly.
Key Takeaways:
- Australia are unbeaten in six of their last seven internationals.
- Denmark have won only 1 of their last & World Cup matches.
- Both teams have scored just 3 goals between them in the tournament so far.
France vs Tunisia
30 November 2022
BCA Prediction: Netherlands win
Defending champions France have already secured a place in the second round, and they come up here against a Tunisia team who have to win in other to stand any chance of progressing. The North Africans have only one point from their opening 2 games, but they have kept it tight at the back, with only one goal conceded. They will have to press forward here to break their scoring duck in this tournament finally, and there are signs to suggest they can get on the scoresheet. Jalel Kadri’s team scored in five consecutive games before the World Cup, including a friendly loss against Brazil.
France have plenty of quality throughout their team, and the fact that have already sealed progress to the second round is proof. They have come into this tournament without key players like Kareem Benzema, Paul Pogba, Ngolo Kante, Presnel Kimpembe, and others who were lost to injuries, so Didier Deschamps will be eager to keep his starters wrapped up in cotton wool.
With Les Bleus likely to rotate heavily and Tunisian being the team to beat, its understandable that punters may hesitate to back France to win given the short offer price. But France have some serious quality in reserve with the likes of Ferland Mendy, William Saliba, Edouardo Camavinga, Matteo Guendouzi and Kingsley Coman waiting to impress. We expect France to win or draw and a few goals to be on display.
Key Takeaways:
- France have conceded in both of their group games and have just one clean sheet in their last eight games
- France have now won three of their last 4 competitive internationals
- Tunisia scored in 5 consecutive matches ahead of the World Cup
Poland vs Argentina
30 November 2022
BCA Prediction: Argentina win
Poland leads Group C ahead of this last round of games, but they may need results elsewhere to go their way as they take on Argentina on Wednesday. Lionel Scaloni’s Argentina were stunned by Saudi in their opener in one of the tournament’s biggest shocks so far, but they have since bounced back with an assured display in a 2-0 win over Poland. Even with the loss against the Saudis, Argentina have managed six clean sheets in their last seven games.
Poland have arguably one of the best centre-forward in world football, but he has largely had to feed on scraps as they have struggled to create chances for him in their opening two games. The lack of creativity didn’t just start at this tournament either as they only scored 4 goals in the last five competitive internationals they played before the World Cup. Overall, the Poles have won just two of their last seven competitive fixtures, which does not spell confidence going into this crunch clash.
Lionel Messi has starred for Argentina so far, and he has been involved in all of their three goals so far. He has scored in each of his last five games for his country – hitting an incredible 12 goals in total during that run. This bodes well for Argentina, and we see them win and produce another clean sheet.
Key Takeaways:
- Argentina have managed six clean sheets in their last seven games.
- Lionel Messi has scored an incredible 12 goals in his last five games for Argentina.
- Poland have scored seven goals in their seven competitive internationals.
Saudi Arabia vs Mexico
30 November 2022
BCA Prediction: Saudi Arabia win
Despite suffering a 2-0 loss in their last match against Poland, Saudi Arabia would be over the moon to still have a chance of progressing to the next round. Only a win can guarantee their progression, while a draw will be enough if Poland defeats Argentina in the other game. The Saudis have attempted 19 shots in their opening game which is an indication that they do not fear any side and we expect that to continue here. Afterall, they won 12, drawn 2 and lost only 2 of their last 14 competitive internationals.
On the other hand, Mexico finds themselves on the edge of elimination after progressing beyond the group stages in each of the last seven tournaments. Only a victory here would give them a chance of qualifying but they will still need the result of the other game to go their way. They will need to score a goal to get the win they need, something they are yet to do in this competition. Indeed, they have failed to score in any of their last four World Cup games.
The Saudis have been the most impressive of these two sides at this tournament so far, but they are winless in all of the prior meetings between the two nations, drawing once and losing 4 times. This, coupled with their profligacy in front of the goal against Poland, makes it hard to back them for an outright win. However, Mexico’s blunt strike force and the fact that they will be open in search of a goal means that Saudi Arabia could get some joy and avoid defeat.
Key Takeaways:
- Mexico have failed to score in each of their last four World Cup matches.
- Saudi Arabia have avoided defeat in eight of their last ten matches.
- Saudi Arabia had 16 goal attempts in their last match against Poland.
