Wales vs Iran

25 November 2022

BCA Prediction: Iran win or draw (X2)

Wales face England in their final group game, so they will be desperate for a result against Iran if they are to progress. They are in poor form, though and have now gone 6 games without a win. Overall, they have won only 1 of the last six matches they have played away from their home turf. A lack of goals has also become apparent, and an overreliance on Gareth Bale means they have now failed to score more than once in seven of their last 8 competitive games.

Iran offered very little in the first half against England before scoring twice in the second half to salvage some pride in a 6-2 defeat. Carlos Queiroz’s men need a result here to avoid going out early, and they should not be underestimated here. Iran won 5 of their six away fixtures in World Cup qualifying and have failed to score in only one of those games.

Rob Page’s side prefers to sit behind the ball and rely on Gareth Bale’s pace on the counter, and they will be even more cautious here, knowing a loss will be detrimental going into their game against England. Coupled with their recent poor form and dearth of goals, they may struggle against a motivated Iran side who will feel they have already played the best team in the group. Iran to avoid defeat, is a fairly decent pick.

Key Takeaways:

  • In their 34 most recent home matches of all competitions, Wales have been undefeated 29 times.
  • In their last 8 games in all competitions, Wales have recorded only 1 win.
  • In their last 46 games in all competitions, Iran have recorded 40 undefeated encounters.
  • Iran have been scoring 2.00 goals on average in their games in World Cup.

Qatar vs Senegal

25 November 2022

BCA Prediction: Senegal win or draw (X2)

Qatar lost out 2-0 to Ecuador in their opener and never looked like getting anything out of the game at any point. The Hosts came into this tournament with a good record having won four out of their 5 most recent competitive matches. But the tepid display against Ecuador has put their recent good form in context as their wins have come against the likes of El Salvador, Grenada, Oman and India.

Senegal, like Ecuador, are a cut above those teams. The Lions of Teranga were perhaps unlucky not to at least claim a point against Netherlands having haven stayed in the match for so long. They have only won two of their last 10 games at the World Cup so they will see this fixture as a really good chance to improve on that record. And they have shown they can rise to the occasion as they won by at least two goals in three of their four knockout games in their successful AFCON campaign earlier this year.

The hosts will be eager to avoid an embarrassing early exit here, but Senegal should win here by merely replicating the performance against Netherlands. However, Aliou Cisse’s men will feel the absence of star man Sadio Mane in attack so a safe pick would be a Senegal double chance.

Key Takeaways:

  • Senegal have only won 2 out of their last 10 World Cup games.
  • Senegal have avoided defeat in 9 out of their last 12 matches away from home soil.
  • Qatar have lost their last 2 competitive matches without scoring.
  • A loss for Qatar in the match will mean the host country will be the first team to exit this year’s world cup

Netherlands vs Ecuador

25 November 2022

BCA Prediction: Netherlands win or draw (1X)

Both of these teams won their opening matches 2-0, but while Ecuador cruised against Qatar, Netherlands toiled and needed two late goals to win against Senegal. The Oranje struggled to create chances against the AFCON holders until the introduction of Memphis Depay. He is still lacking match fitness and is likely to be limited to a substitute role again, so do not expect fireworks in attack from the Dutch.

Netherlands may be struggling to create, but they have now managed three clean sheets. Ecuador trumps this with 7 straight clean sheets of their own though. Diego Alonso’s men have shown real resolve defensively and the last time they conceded a goal was in a 1-1 draw against Argentina in March.

This is a matchup of two solid teams, and the Netherlands will be keen to win and secure three points here to seal qualification early. However, Ecuador are tough nuts to crack and there has now been under 2.5 goals scored in 13 of their last 14 games. They are one of the youngest squads at this World Cup though and that inexperience might come into play here, so we go for Netherlands double chance.

Key Takeaways:

  • In all of their 14 most recent matches of all competitions, there have been no losses for Netherlands
  • In Netherlands’s last 3 games in all competitions there have been under 2.5 goals scored
  • Ecuador are in an unfortunate period, having won just 3 of their last 20 away matches in all competitions
  • There are no losses for Ecuador in 7 of their most recent 8 games (all competitions)

England vs USA

25 November 2022,

BCA Prediction: England win

Victory for Gareth Southgate’s England team will them qualify for the second round with a game to spare. They will be confident mood after putting six past Iran, meaning they have scored 9 goals in their last two games. The fact that they had 5 different scorers against Iran and Harry Kane was not one means that there are plenty of goals in this squad.

The USA looked really good in the first half of their opener against Wales, but their performance tailed off in the second half, and they had to settle for a draw. This means they have now failed to win any of the last 7 competitive games that were not played on home soil, scoring only three goals in the process. Overall, the only wins in their last 12 competitive games have come against minnows like Grenada, Panama, Honduras and El Salvador.

Clean sheets have been an issue for the three lions, having conceded in 6 of their last seven competitive matches, but the Americans are not in the best of form. The last time both teams met was at the 2010 world cup; the match ended in a 1:1 draw. We believe they have the firepower to get the win here.

Key Takeaways:

  • England have just one clean sheet in their last 7 matches.
  • There were 5 different England goal-scorers in their 6-2 win against Iran.
  • USA have won only 2 of their last 12 World Cup matches.
  • There have been under 2.5 goals in 6 of the latest away games in all competitions of USA.
