Premier Soccer League (PSL) chairman Dr Irvin Khoza has officially announced the prize money for the 2024-25 season, confirming that this year’s league champions will pocket an impressive R20 million. In addition, new betting rules for players have been set to keep the sport clean and focused.
A Big Win Awaits PSL Champions
PSL champions for the 2024-25 season will be rewarded with R20 million in prize money. This announcement was highly anticipated after Khoza introduced Betway as the league’s new title sponsor a few months ago. Although he revealed Betway’s sponsorship at the time, the prize money remained under wraps—until now. On Wednesday morning, Khoza, or “Iron Duke” as he’s known in the football community, confirmed the prize amount, offering clarity on what’s at stake for the top teams this season.
In a succinct statement, Khoza announced, “The prize money for the 2024/25 Betway Premiership winner will be R20 million.”
New Partnership Brings Boosts and Betting Rules
The league’s new title sponsor, Betway, brings with it a three-year, R900 million partnership deal, marking a new era for South Africa’s top-tier league. Last season, the PSL title winner took home R15 million under DStv’s sponsorship. With Betway now on board, the prize fund has been boosted by R5 million, offering the largest prize in PSL history for the 2024-25 champions.
With one of South Africa’s top betting companies as a sponsor, the league is also reinforcing its commitment to responsible gambling. Speaking on behalf of the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation, Sibongile Simelane-Quntana highlighted the foundation’s purpose, stating, “Collaborating with Betway and the PSL during National Responsible Gambling Month is part of our effort to highlight not only the potential risks of problem gambling but also the availability of free support services.” This partnership serves to educate and support both fans and players in managing the risks associated with gambling.
Players Face New Betting Rules
With Betway’s sponsorship also comes new rules for players: PSL athletes are now barred from placing any bets. This restriction aligns with the league’s commitment to fair play, ensuring players focus solely on their on-field performance. The rule underscores the PSL’s dedication to maintaining the integrity of the sport, especially with a betting company as its title sponsor.
