In response to growing concerns over the harmful effects of gambling addiction, gaming operators in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, are taking proactive steps to address the issue. The initiative aims to encourage responsible gambling practices while offering support and resources to those struggling with addiction.
This initiative emerged during a breakfast meeting organized by the Association of Nigerian Bookmakers (ANB) in collaboration with Gamble Alert. Its primary goal is to ensure that gambling remains a safe and enjoyable activity while safeguarding vulnerable individuals from harm.
Fisayo Oke, the Chief Executive Officer of ANB, emphasized the importance of this initiative. He highlighted that while gambling can be a source of fun and entertainment, it also carries the risk of addiction, which can have severe consequences for individuals and their families. With the increasing prevalence of online gambling, the need for responsible gaming practices and protective measures has become more crucial than ever.
Challenges of Online Gambling
Oke noted that the rise of online gambling has made it easier for individuals to develop gambling addictions since it can be accessed anytime and anywhere.
While acknowledging the positive step taken with this initiative, he stressed the need for continued efforts to protect gamblers.
Mrs. Olabimpe Akingba, the Executive Secretary of ANB, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to promoting responsible gaming. She emphasized that as key players in the gaming industry, they recognize their responsibility in addressing the potential harms associated with gambling and are dedicated to the cause of responsible gaming.
